Join our weekly gathering, where American Mussar Founder Rabbi Greg Marcus facilitates a highly interactive Mussar community. We meet Thursdays on Zoom at 4 Pacific/7 Eastern.
Mussar as a Practice
Mussar is a powerful practice that has daily, weekly and yearly elements. We practice one Soul Trait at a time, usually for two weeks. (You can get a downloadable list of Soul Traits here.) We begin each morning with a mantra or recitation phrase to help frame the day. For example, one Equanimity mantra is “Better to surf the wave than to get pounded or swept away.” Then, we look for one small action we can take outside of our comfort zone to help move towards balance. Finally, at night the best practice is to journal about your experiences. Not everyone does the journaling – the important step is self reflection.
Mussar in Community
In a Mussar community, we are souls sharing a journey. Every person has an opportunity to participate, both in the group and in a private breakout room with one one or two other people. The wisdom of he community is a powerful thing, as we learn from others challenges and triumphs. This group started in March of 2020 during the Covid shutdown, and has met continuously since then.
However, you don’t need any experience to join. Rabbi Greg strives to make American Mussar as accessible to people as possible. Plus, this is a drop in group. You can join at any time! New people join regularly, so you do not need to have any background in Mussar to join.
